Our Classroom Website

Welcome!

I am creating this page to keep communication open during our coronavirus shutdown. Our remote learning will begin on Monday, April 6th through Friday, May 15th. Remote learning hours are from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. I will attach a schedule, in case you did not receive the schedule Ms. Novack sent home. Her schedule goes beyond the hours of instruction with a suggested schedule to help keep the children on a regular routine.

Our Schedule:

9:30-10:00: ELA       Live Zoom Mon. and Tues.

10:00-11:00: Break My Office Hours

11:00-1:00 Lunch/Chores/ Recess

1:00-1:45 Math       Live Zoom Wed. and Thurs.

1:45-2:00 Break

2:00-2:30 Specials M-PE, T-Lib, W-Music, TH-Art, F-LIM/Mindfulness

Fridays we focus on Science. Go to the ELA folder Friday morning at 9:30 for the ELA connection on Readworks.

Friday afternoon From 1:00-1:45 we have a lesson on Zoom followed by an exit ticket or activity.

 Schoology:

Schoology is the platform the district is using for communication and to access materials from home. I am attaching a link to a page the district is using to share information about accessing the program.

Teaching and Curriculum:

I am trying to follow our curriculum pacing guides as much as possible with the constraints that come with distance and lack of hands-on materials that we would use in the classroom.

In ELA, On Mondays and Tuesdays, we will follow the same comprehension skills and focuses that we would in the classroom with a read-aloud on Zoom and direct instruction on using these skills in our reading. We will also look at increasing and building our vocabulary while identifying the meanings of unknown words with context clues. There will be an activity that follows which allows students to practice the skills. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, I am asking that you have your child go directly to IReady from the district web page through Clever and complete the assignments there. This instruction is based on your child's individual strengths and needs. On Friday, there will be a passage assigned to go along with our focus in science or social studies on Readworks.

In Math, on Wednesdays and Thursdays, we will focus on Number Corner and the Problem of the Day from the Math Learning Center's remote learning materials during our live Zoom lesson. Math is a bit trickier as our curriculum involved lots of hands-on materials and preparation. I am using some things that our program has offered for remote teaching, such as the problem of the day as well as the digital version of our number corner in live Zoom lessons on Wednesdays and Thursdays. I may assign lessons on IReady that meet the skills we would be doing in the classroom with virtual materials, or have your child log on to receive lessons that will address needs based on our winter IReady assessment. Dreambox also works to individualize instruction according to strengths and weaknesses and lessons from Dreambox will be assigned occasionally.

Science will take place on Fridays with a reading assignment in the ELA folder on Schoology for the morning session from 9:30-10:00.

We will meet again Friday afternoon at 1:00 for a live Zoom session and there will be a short activity that follows.

Science is most difficult to teach from home, so I have been trying to find the best methods for teaching without asking families to have materials that would make the lessons more meaningful.

Zoom:

Due to concerns with Zoom bombing, we now have to be extra careful in admitting people into our meetings. Ideally, I would attach the links to our meetings on this page to make things easier to find, but I do not feel secure in doing so. I will have hyperlinks attached to the folders in Schoology so that you can access them there for the live sessions. If you miss a live session, I am trying to get them uploaded into folders so you can review at a later time. We feel secure leaving the links in Schoology as well as the recordings of the lessons. What is concerning is trying to keep people who are not part of our class out. Early this week, Ms. Novack sent a parent link out asking families to enter with their correct names and video on. We need to see you too. It seems students were changing their names and it presented concerns with admitting unknown people into the lesson. If we do not recognize your name, we cannot let you in. Also, we cannot let students in with a number. We do not have time to check and see if your number is an actual student number unless we have that information handy during a lesson. During a lesson, I am going to a shared screen so you can see the information, making sure everyone is connected and engaged and trying to take attendance. This is all new to me. Please come to our meeting with your correct name on the screen.
